Classic Paint for Windows 10 isn't portable, so installation is required. Great for those who miss it, or just for nostalgia. Sporting a simple and intuitive UI, Paintbrush will have you discovering your inner van Gogh in no time. Classic Paint for Windows 10 is the classic paint app before Paint 3D took its place. Whether you need to quickly crop a photo, add some text to an image, or just have fun doodling, Paintbrush has you covered. Instead, it aims to fill the need for a basic, streamlined, and Mac-native image editor. Paintbrush is not intended to replace Adobe Photoshop or other high-end image editors. You can also paste images copied from many common Mac applications, including Microsoft Office and Apple iWork.

Full support for transparency is available for image formats that support an alpha channel (currently PNGs and GIFs). Paintbrush can open and save to most major image formats, including BMP, PNG, JPEG, TIFF, and GIF. Twenty-five years later, every Mac still includes a basic text editor in TextEdit, but a simple paint program is a thing of the past. When Apple released the original Macintosh in 1984, they included two applications: MacWrite and MacPaint. It provides users with a means to make simple images quickly. The new version of the application will be a 'Universal' app and might become available on all Windows 10 devices including Windows 10 Mobile. These are nitpicks in the grand scheme of things, though. Microsoft is working on a new app which is intended to replace the good old classic Paint app in Windows 10. It should follow the behavior of Microsoft Paint.
PaintBrush, counter-intuitively, has you "left click" for the primary color and "right click" for the secondary color. In Paint, the you select the color you want to replace with the picker (either the primary or secondary color), select the color picker tool, and then pick the color on the canvas you want. Additionally, a feature found even in older versions of paint, the hidden color replacement tool with the eraser tool, is missing.įour, the color picker tool does not work as expected. Microsoft Paint, going back to Windows 7, has added quite a few additional shapes and antialiasing (even though this isn't something I use, I would appreciate it being there). Three, the tool is missing a few features found in modern Microsoft Paint. I would highly suggest using Preview as an example. Two, to build off of point 1, the overall UI and other design language could be brought into the current MacOS design language. Even GIMP has gone for a single-window design in more recent builds. If we take a look at more advanced tools like Photoshop and Pixelmator, we can see that floating windows have been abandoned a long time ago. I use Microsoft Paint to create pixel art as a hobby, and unfortunately, Paintbrush does fall a bit short for it to be a replacement.įor one, the floating window application design has never been a good design paradigm, and it doesn't work for a tool like this.

It competed against Mouse Systems PC Paint (not related despite the similar name). The earlier DOS versions were often bundled with Microsoft and Microsoft compatible mice, and were notable for supporting a huge variety of video adapters. Functionally, it's quite similar to Microsoft Paint for older Windows versions (think Windows 95 through Windows XP). ZSoft PC Paintbrush is a bitmap drawing program visually similar to MacPaint. It's a nice tool that provides some basic raster "painting".
